A new community of makers and creative community groups specialising in waste prevention, sustainability and upcycling has opened a hub of outlets inside the old municipal market building at Circus Street.
To celebrate their new home, they held a free Valentine’s Day event on Saturday February 14, offering inspiration, ideas and advice on creative reuse and upcycling, to ‘make the most of your stuff’, inviting the public to bring along something interesting from their homes to swap, improve or recycle.
The space will be open daily inviting people to come and be inspired by ideas from social enterprises including Remade in Brighton, which sells recycled & upcyled clothes and furniture, reclaiming unwanted textiles, furniture and general ‘left behind items’, along with providing a community haberdashery service.
Diversis Artibus is a group of four local artists who are passionate about the Brighton Arts scene and will be sharing a space to showcase local art talent, turning old and disused items into something new and exciting.
Freegle offers swaps on household goods and unwanted building materials, as well as offering furniture for loan to community groups, such as waste bins, chairs and tables.
Other community projects in the space include Didi DIY, offering unique DIY classes taught by skilled, qualified & experienced professionals. Their objective is to connect one professional with a small group of beginners and teach them to apply and acquire simple skills in DIY in a safe & fun environment, to feel confident to tackle home projects and improve the quality of their homes.
Bike Train CIC upcycles metal and materials to make cargo bikes and trailers to carry goods, as well as old bike frames and recycled wood.
